What Backflow Is and Why It Matters

When pressure drops, water in your pipes — along with any contaminants it may have picked up from irrigation lines, garden hoses, chemical injectors, or industrial processes — can be siphoned back into the public water supply.

A backflow preventer is a mechanical assembly that allows water to flow in only one direction. When pressure tries to reverse, check valves inside the device close and block the backflow. They’re required at any cross-connection point where there’s potential for contamination to enter the supply.
