Kitchen Plumbing Upgrades in Fontana, CA: What’s Worth It and What to Skip

Kitchen remodels rank among the most common home improvement projects in Fontana — and plumbing is almost always part of the job. Whether you’re replacing a faucet, adding a garbage disposal, or doing a full kitchen renovation, knowing what’s actually worth the investment can save you time, money, and headaches.

A O Dowd Plumbing handles kitchen plumbing throughout Fontana and the Inland Empire. Here’s our honest take on the most common kitchen plumbing upgrades — what we recommend, what we skip, and what to watch out for.

Garbage Disposal: Usually Worth It

A quality garbage disposal is one of the most practical kitchen plumbing upgrades you can make. Modern units are quieter, more powerful, and better at handling fibrous foods than older models.

What to know: not all disposals are created equal. We recommend units rated at 3/4 HP or higher for households that cook regularly. Lower-horsepower units jam frequently and tend to burn out faster with regular use. We install and service InSinkErator and Waste King units that hold up well in Fontana’s hard water conditions.

One caution: disposals and septic systems don’t mix well. If your home uses a septic tank, adding a disposal significantly increases the solid waste load and can shorten the time between pump-outs.

Faucet Replacement: Often a DIY Job, But Sometimes It Isn’t

Replacing a kitchen faucet is one of those tasks that looks simple in a YouTube video and turns complicated in real life — especially in older Fontana homes where shutoff valves under the sink corrode and the supply lines are stiff and brittle.

If your shutoff valves haven’t been turned in years, there’s a reasonable chance they’ll fail or drip when you try to use them. In that case, what starts as a $200 faucet job becomes a valve replacement too.

We’re happy to swap out faucets and take care of those corroded valves at the same time so you don’t end up with a bigger problem later.

Under-Sink Water Filtration: Worth It If You Want Better Drinking Water

Fontana’s municipal water is safe to drink, but many homeowners don’t love the taste — and with the hard water common in the Inland Empire, that’s understandable. An under-sink reverse osmosis system delivers noticeably better-tasting drinking water right at your tap.

These systems filter out chlorine, sediment, heavy metals, and other dissolved solids. Installation typically takes 2–3 hours and requires connecting to the cold supply line and drilling a small hole in the sink for the dedicated RO faucet.

If you already have a water softener, an RO filter is an excellent companion — the softener protects your pipes and appliances, and the RO filter gives you clean drinking water without the added sodium from softening.

Moving the Sink or Adding an Island Sink: Plan Carefully

Moving a kitchen sink to a new location — or adding a prep sink to an island — is absolutely doable, but it’s a real plumbing job that requires extending supply lines and, more critically, properly routing the drain.

Drain lines need to slope correctly toward the main drain (typically 1/4 inch drop per foot of run). Island sinks are trickier because they can’t drain through a wall — they require a special island drain loop or an air admittance valve, and the drain has to route through the floor.

This is work that needs to be planned before the cabinets go in. If you’re in the design phase of a kitchen remodel, loop us in early. We’ve fixed too many kitchens where the plumbing was an afterthought.

What We’d Skip: Fancy Touchless Faucets with Poor Track Records

Touchless and motion-sensing faucets have become popular, and some high-end models are genuinely reliable. But lower-cost touchless faucets see a lot of service calls — the sensors fail, the solenoid valves stick, and batteries run out at inconvenient times.

If you love the idea of a touchless faucet, invest in a quality brand and expect to pay for it. If budget is a concern, a traditional pull-down faucet from a trusted brand will give you less trouble over the long run.
