Whole-House Repiping in Rancho Cucamonga & Fontana: What Homeowners Need to Know

If your home was built before 1990 and you’ve been dealing with recurring leaks, discolored water, or mysteriously low pressure, there’s a reasonable chance your pipes are the problem. Repiping sounds like a major undertaking — and it is — but for homes with failing pipe systems, it’s often the most cost-effective long-term solution.

A O Dowd Plumbing handles whole-house repiping throughout Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Rialto, Colton, and the surrounding Inland Empire. Here’s what you need to know before making a decision.

Why Older Pipes Fail in the Inland Empire

Southern California’s hard water is particularly hard on aging pipe materials. The Inland Empire’s water supply typically carries 15–25 grains per gallon of hardness, and over decades, scale buildup narrows the inside diameter of pipes and accelerates corrosion.

Galvanized steel pipes — common in homes built before the 1970s — rust from the inside out. As the rust builds up, it restricts flow, discolors the water, and eventually causes pinhole leaks or complete failures. Polybutylene pipes, used widely in the 1980s and early 1990s, have proven prone to cracking and chemical degradation — they were the subject of class action lawsuits and are no longer approved for new construction.

Signs Your Home May Need Repiping

• Recurring leaks in multiple locations (not just one problem pipe)

• Brown, red, or yellow-tinted water, especially from the hot side

• Significant drop in water pressure throughout the house

• Pipes that are visibly corroded or that leak when touched

• Galvanized or polybutylene pipes identified during a plumbing inspection

• Your home is 30+ years old and has never had plumbing replaced

One or two of these signs might mean a targeted repair is sufficient. Multiple signs across the house typically point to systemic pipe failure that’s better addressed all at once.

Copper vs. PEX: Which Material Is Right for Your Repipe?

The two most common materials used in whole-house repiping today are copper and PEX (cross-linked polyethylene). Both are excellent choices; they have different strengths.

Copper has a 50+ year track record, is highly resistant to bacteria, and is approved for all water types and uses. It costs more than PEX and requires more labor to install due to soldering.

PEX is flexible, resistant to scale buildup, faster to install, and less expensive. It’s now the most commonly used material for residential repiping in California. One consideration in Southern California: PEX exposed to UV light degrades, so any exterior runs need to be protected or done in copper.

We’ll walk you through both options and make a recommendation based on your home’s layout, budget, and local conditions.

What the Repiping Process Looks Like

We know the idea of repiping your home sounds disruptive, and we won’t pretend it’s a small job. But with an experienced crew, most single-family homes can be repiped in 1–3 days.

Here’s the general process:

We conduct a full assessment of your existing system and map the new pipe routes

Access holes are cut in walls and ceilings where needed — we work carefully to minimize drywall damage

New supply lines are run throughout the house

Your water is restored the same day the work is done

We patch the access holes and test the entire system before we leave

You’ll need to arrange for drywall patching and painting after the job — we’ll make sure the patches are clean and straightforward for your contractor.

Does Repiping Require a Permit in Fontana or Rancho Cucamonga?

Yes. Whole-house repiping requires a permit in both Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga, and in most Inland Empire cities. We pull the required permits, and the work is inspected by the city before we close the walls.

Be cautious of any contractor who suggests skipping the permit process — it creates problems when you sell the home and can void your homeowner’s insurance if something goes wrong. We do this right.
